Tryouts: What Do Evaluators Look For?

As we approach Club Tryouts, our parents and players want to make sure they are preparing properly for this important day.  Below is part of the information each trainer/evaluator is given prior to holding the tryout session. Players should relax and do the things they normally do in training.  Players are not going to be put through anything they probably haven’t seen already, either in practices or games; skill exercises and small sided play.

However, because trainers are held to high standards during this process and at times have to make very difficult decisions, it’s important that you keep your concentration for the entire tryout period.

Enjoy the Experience!

What Evaluators look for at Tryouts:

All trainers understand that technique is the main component of the game.  Without it there are no tactics or any solid base for team work. They are also looking for decision making as well as athleticism, but skill is of utmost importance.

Observe:
  1. Technical speed of the player
  2. Composure and ability to keep possession under pressure
  3. Creativity
  4. Ability to play right and left (passing, shooting, long passing, dribbling/running with the ball)
  5. Heading ability, to a degree
Also observe:
1.      Tactical speed (the ability to read the game and make good decisions)
2.      Transitional awareness
3.      Leadership
4.      Communication

As well as:
  1. Physical Abilities; quickness/speed, shielding ability, tackling ability, jumping abilities.
